MURCIA
Founded in around 825 the capital city is the political cultural and economic centre of the region but still remains unmistakably Moorish in origin. Without doubt the show piece of the city is its impressive cathedral built over several different historic and artistic periods. Countless other churches, museums and plazas make this city a must see for all visitors.
FIESTAS
With Murcia still a traditionally Spanish region fiestas play an important part in its calendar. Each town or city has its own festival times but the most colourful parades occur at Easter time where dozens of brightly decorated floats go through the streets.
THE MAR MENOR
The mar menor is a 170 kilometre square saltwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean by a strip of land called La Manga and is a site of ecological value. The salt marshes at San Pedro del Pinatar were declared a protected area in 1985. This nature reserve combines salt marshes, flats, reed beds, beaches and dunes and migratory birds such as flamingos, herons, storks and gulls. Nearby is the coastal village of Lo Pagan where you can find the therapeutic mud baths.
SHOPPING
For those who like nothing more than a bit of retail therapy then Murcia will not let you down. As well as two major shopping centres at Murcia City and Cartegena where most of the named brands can be found there are numerous markets on every day of the week all over the area selling local produce and crafts.
CARTAGENA
Situated 48kms from Murcia, Cartagena is a city whose origins go back thousands of years indeed 223bc is the year generally given to the founding of the city. Cartagena possesses cultural and artistic heritage built up over thousands of years from contributions made by different civilisations which have inhabited the area. The plaza del ayunamiento is the hub of the city attracting scores of locals and visitors every day especially when the cruise liners are dock. As you would expect with a city rich in such a history there are countless architectural delights to see as well as the modern.
PUERTO DE MAZZARON
The port is the closest beach to Condado only being a 15 minute ride away and has grown considerably in the past few years. The harbour area has recently been developed and is now the central meeting place of the town with both the Spanish and tourists frequenting this area especially on Sundays and all through July and august. Long stretches of sandy beach and small coves make this a sun seekers paradise and most of the beaches are child friendly with shallow water. The open air market held every Sunday is one of the biggest in the area.
